Rehearsal Dinner Dress Code

The rehearsal dinner is more intimate and relaxed, but you’ll still want to look chic and polished. There’s usually a smart casual dress code for a wedding rehearsal dinner—think of it as comfortable yet stylish. You’re not dressing down, just keeping it elegantly simple.

A go-to that never fails? A streamlined sheath dress style. Stylist Erin notes, “The clean lines and tailored design of a sheath dress make it a perfect choice!” Pair it with kitten heels or classic pumps to complete your look.

Into something a little more fun? Try a dress in a classic pattern like polka dots, or even florals. You can typically infuse a little more fun into the rehearsal dinner dress code, so Erin adds, “Don’t shy away from bold colors if that’s your thing.” Ground your look in neutral-colored shoes with some simple jewelry and you’re all set.

If you’re not into dresses, no worries. Jumpsuits, matching sets and separates also work perfectly for a rehearsal dinner dress code. Remember to take cues from the venue. If it’s outdoors, go for a flowier silhouette. Or, if it’s an evening indoor event, opt for something sleek in darker hues. Accessorize simply, with minimal jewelry and a great pair of heels or sandals.

Cocktail Attire for Women at a Wedding

Cocktail attire is a wedding classic! For women, this means it’s time to dress things up and dial up the glam—think sophistication and elegance.

The little black dress (LBD) is always a winner. Stylist Erin notes, “Having an LBD is a cocktail event go-to—it makes getting dressed less stressful since it’s so reliable and versatile.” To add some interest, try a knee-length or midi dress in a luxe fabric like chiffon, satin or lace. For shoes, you can’t go wrong with a head-to-toe black look— just add your favorite strappy black heels and clutch. Or, add a pop of color, like violet or red, to your bag and heels, making your wedding guest attire a little more unique.

Looking to add even more color? Try your knee-length or midi dress in a color. For spring and summer weddings, you can never go wrong with pastels, like lavender or sky blue. During fall and winter, maroon and deep green are great options. Play with different necklines, too. Sweetheart, square neck and the class V-neck are always go-tos.

If dresses aren’t your thing, a sleek jumpsuit is also a great choice for cocktail wedding attire. We love styles that feature a wide-leg—they’re so universally flattering and instantly create a streamlined look. Add some statement earrings or a necklace, and you’re cocktail-ready. A reminder from Stylist Erin: “A great wedding guest outfit doesn’t have to be for one-time wear.” She continues, “Look for dresses, jumpsuits or chic separates that can be restyled for future events.”

Festive + Semi-formal Wedding Dress Code

Semi-formal wedding dress codes are the sweet spot between casual elegance and full-on glamour, ideal for most weddings. It’s a chance to dress up without going too extravagant.

“Midi or full-length dresses in elevated fabrics like silk, crepe or chiffon are perfect,” says Erin. Or, try out dressy separates—like a silky blouse paired with a chic, flowing skirt. It can be equally stunning, especially with structured accessories like a sophisticated clutch or bold jewelry.

Recently, more weddings have incorporated a “festive” dress code—typically entailing a specific color palette the bride and groom want the guests to dress in. This is a great opportunity to express your personal style. If you’re asked to dress in purple, wear and pair different tones and textures in one look to keep things interesting. For example, a lavender chiffon dress paired with a violet silky blazer and metallic heels for contrast—so fun.

If there’s no specific color palette, a festive dress code encourages guests to play with brighter colors, bolder prints and statement accessories, while still looking polished and put together AKA it’s the perfect opportunity to have some fun—wear a louder color and bring out those conversation-starter accessories.

When choosing outerwear for any semi-formal wedding dress code, Erin notes, “A tailored blazer keeps you warm and dry without compromising style.” She continues, “Choose lightweight, wedding-appropriate outerwear that compliments your dress rather than covering it up.”

“Midi or full-length dresses in elevated fabrics like silk, crepe or chiffon are perfect.”

Beach Wedding Dress Code

Beach weddings are delightfully relaxed, calling for breezy and comfortable outfits that still look stylish and appropriate for a sunny seaside celebration.

Stylist Erin suggests, “An open back adds an airy, beachy touch or a minimalist slip dress is such a beachside classic.” Opt for breathable fabrics like silk, cotton or linen blends to keep you cool on warmer wedding days. If you want to switch things up, consider pairing lightweight skirts or linen pants with breezy tops featuring floral or tropical prints.

Erin gives a great reminder when picking outfits for a beach wedding dress code, “Go for sand-friendly wedged or flat sandals.” Also, don’t be afraid to lean into the beachy elements. Stylist Erin suggests, “Accessorize with pearl or shell-drop earrings for a nautical touch.” Subtle yet stunning.

Garden Attire Wedding Dress Code

Garden weddings blend natural beauty with refined elegance. Embrace soft colors, florals and comfortable yet sophisticated styles suitable for outdoor settings.

“To add to the romantic setting, florals or botanical prints are a natural choice,” Erin suggests. Picking your favorite floral dress for a garden wedding is up to you—from ditsy to bold patterns, and pastel to nature-inspired colors. Midi or tea-length dresses offer just the right balance of comfort and elegance for any garden party dress code for outdoor weddings.

Look for dresses with delicate details to amp up the romantic vibe. Stylist Erin suggests, “Cascading ruffles or eyelet designs add the perfect feminine touches.” She also reminds us, “Opt for block-heeled sandals—both stylish and practical for walking on grass that can sink.”
