Breaking the rules can be scary. But when it comes to style, rules are meant to be broken. White after Labor Day? Navy worn with black? Why not!? Fashion should be fun, expressive & free—and, come to think of it, we’re not even sure who made up these rules. So, we’re challenging you to push yourself out of your comfort zone (with the help of your Stylist, of course) to be a rule-breaker now.
RULE #1 TO BREAK: WEARING BOLD COLORS TOGETHER
If you ask us, pairing bright with brighter makes your look really pop—and who doesn’t like a little extra attention? Not only is it an instant (positive!) attitude adjustment, but “bright-blocking” is a fearless way to bring out the hues that best flatter your skin tone.
Stylist Tip: The trick to bright-blocking is making sure the colors are complementary to one another & to your skin tone. If you look best in warm tones, wear yellows, reds & corals. If you’re more cool, ask your Stylist to send you cobalts, kelly greens & purples.
RULE #2 TO BREAK: MATCHING SHOES TO HANDBAG
Of course you want your accessories to work together—but there’s no need to get too “matchy-matchy.” Bags and shoes don’t need to be the same shade, texture or tone. By giving each its own moment to shine, you get can be more playful with your look.
Stylist Tip: Make sure each piece plays well with others. Nothing needs to match, per se, but your accessories should run in the same color family (cool or warm) & your prints should stay minimal. This reduces competition & avoids running the risk of totally clashing.
RULE #3 TO BREAK: DENIM ON DENIM
If wearing more denim is wrong, we don’t want to be right. Nailing the denim-on-denim look really boils down to mixing shades of indigo. Ask your Stylist to mix it up & send you new washes or even new fall styles. Then, make sure the two shades of denim you pair aren’t too similar.
Stylist Tip: When you’re wearing denim on denim, consider playing with proportion. Try pairing skinnies with airy chambray tunics or curve-hugging flares with fitted denim button-ups—the combos are endless.
RULE #4 TO BREAK: PAIRING BLACK & NAVY
Navy and black, together at last! Why did we ever try to separate these two anyway? Navy is a wear-now neutral and, when paired with black, it makes an incredibly chic color combo. By layering these two, you’ll get the benefits of a dark palette with more dimension.
Stylist Tip: Since the colors are quite similar, you’ll want to play up their differences by playing with shape & textures. A structured faux-leather bomber over a silk navy dress highlights the details of both pieces—plus their difference in texture will add interesting dimension to the look.
RULE #5 TO BREAK: WEARING GOLD & SILVER JEWELRY
If it’s OK to mix your prints, why not metals? Mixing silver with gold can give your accessories game a well-rounded feel, plus it’s much less stressful & it’s totally on-trend. The trick is to look for pieces that have similar tones like silver with gunmetal or gold with rose-gold. If you want to experiment, be sure to adjust your Style Profile to reflect (literally) an interest in both gold and silver.
Stylist Tip: An easy way to get the look? Ask your Stylist to send you jewelry that’s already mixed! Be sure to request that your favorite metal (ie: silver) is the base and the other (ie: gold) is the accent.
