While most of us rarely find occasion to pull out our formal wear, a black tie event is an opportunity to get dressed up and red-carpet ready. The dress code for these events typically suggests that men wear suits, but where does that leave the ladies? Gown? No gown? It certainly can be intimidating.
When it comes to galas and events with formal attire, it’s as the saying goes: you can never be overdressed. A floor-length frock is your best and safest bet. However, in modern times the right cocktail dress can indeed be appropriate. Just be sure to keep your color palette darker, or even metallic—whites, light blues and other delicate colors may be too casual, so tread with caution.
My recommendation? Embrace the evening, have fun with your look and seek out sequins and glitz, or perhaps rely on a stunner in all-black to up your sophistication. Also, consider cut. You’ll never regret choosing silhouettes that suit you best. Once you’ve found the dress, finish with a fabulous heel, jewelry at the neck, ear or wrist (but not all three) and an embellished or satin clutch. Then, raise a glass and toast your formalwear prowess!
