Aka tighty-whities, briefs are the most classic and familiar of the bunch. This style offers strong support, complete coverage and a comfortable fit, due to the elastic waistband and snug fabric. The exposed leg and minimal amount of fabric ensures less bunching under your jeans or shorts, but it won’t prevent against chafing.
Try briefs if you:
- Don’t like extra fabric under your bottoms
- Wear thigh-length or shorter shorts
- Prefer tighter-fitting bottoms
Boxer Briefs
The brainchild of John Varvatos while he was working for Calvin Klein in the early 1990s, boxer briefs are the happy hybrid of boxers and briefs, providing more coverage, support and stretch. They usually cover between ⅓ and ½ of your thigh, so they’ll extend the legline and protect against rubbing or chafing from your pants or short.
Try briefs if you:
- Like a lot of support
- Work out or run
- Wear slim-fitting bottoms
- Prefer a streamlined looks
Boxers
Did you know: looser styles of boxers were inspired by the shorts that professional boxers used to wear in the ring—hence the name. Boxers are known for their comfort and lightweight style, great for lounging at home or wearing under looser pants. Although they generally have an elastic waistband, they don’t usually have support anywhere else on the garment.
Try boxers if you:
- Prefer your underwear to be less fitted
- Don’t want any support
- Wear looser-fitting bottoms
- Like to keep things cool and breezy
